I plug in headphones so as not to disturb sleeping housemates, however when playing Mario Kart Wii, the constant sounds coming from the Wiimote are just as bad! Is there any way I can turn these off?

Press the home button and click the on picture of the wiimote. You can adjust it there
You can go to the Wii menu, then click on the controller settings bar and there will be a volume indicator there. That or you can smash the speaker to oblivion.
