1. Linux on the Playstation 3 can be used for a lot of purposes. You can use it as another desktop computer, a server, a BOINC “number cruncher,” a rendering farm, etc…
2. No, Linux cannot currently be installed on a PS3 Slim. Sony removed the necessary support to boot Linux from the PS3 Slim, so there’s currently no way to install it.
